FreeNAS

FreeNAS is a free operating system based on FreeBSD that allows you to turn your computer into NAS.

FreeNAS provides many features including :

• File sharing : SMB/CIFS (Windows), NFS (Unix), AFP (Apple), FTP and many others
• Raid management : to enjoy better performance and obtain a fault tolerance (depending on the selected RAID level).
• Backup over the network. Either manually (by FTP, for example) or automatic (using the Windows system backup, Apple Time Machine, rsync or PC-BSD Life Preserver
• Plugins : minidlna, owncloud, downloaders, ...
• A web interface for managing services, features provided by FreeNAS, user accounts, ...

Important : as of 2021, FreeNAS is called TrueNAS Core.
