Clean up local backup versions of a PC with Acronis True Image (Cyber Protect Home Office)

Backing up your computer regularly is convenient, but over time, these multiple backups can start to take up a lot of space on your external hard drive. Fortunately, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) makes it easy to clean up the available versions of a single backup.

  1. Multiple versions available
  2. Delete multiple versions of a backup without completely deleting the backup
  3. Delete an incremental backup

1. Multiple versions available

As you can see, in our case, there are many versions available for backup on our computer.
Which can take up a lot of space on the external hard drive where they are stored.

Currently, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) has created 2 ".tibx" backup files which are about 32 GB each in our case.

2. Delete multiple versions of a backup without completely deleting the backup

To make space on your external hard drive, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) allows you to delete versions of the same backup without creating any problems and without completely deleting all of these backups. To do this, click the arrow to the right of your backup, then click "Clean up versions".

In our case, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) displays 2 backup sections: Recent and This Month.

However, when a version depends on other versions, those are also selected.
So, if we try to select one of the backups for this month, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) automatically selects all backups for this month.

On the other hand, for the last 2 backups (displayed in the "Recent" section visible below), you can see that we can delete the incremental backup of "06-07-24 18:21" without deleting the full backup created before it.

On the other hand, if we try to delete the recent full backup of "06-07-24 14:29", Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) will also select the incremental backup located right after it since this incremental backup depends on the full backup we are trying to delete.

For testing, we will only delete older backups from this month (05-07-24 - 06-07-24), because we can't delete just a few in this section.
Once the desired backup versions are selected, click "Delete".

In the "Delete Backup Versions" window that appears, click "Delete" to confirm the deletion of these backup versions.

Please wait while the desired versions are cleaned.

The desired versions have been removed.

On your external hard drive, you may notice that the size of the ".tibx" file has decreased.

If we go into the other ".tibx" file, we can see that there are only 2 backups left.

3. Delete an incremental backup

Via this "Clean up backup versions" option, you can also delete a single incremental backup (if Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) allows you to do so) by selecting it in the list and then clicking "Delete".

Please wait while cleaning.

As expected, the desired version was withdrawn.

As expected, if we open the corresponding ".tibx" file, we can see that there is only one backup left.
Which corresponds to the full version visible above.

If we go back to the "Backup" tab, we can see that the date of the last backup corresponds to the date of the most recent backup that we left in our case.

In the "Restore" tab, we can also see that the desired old versions are also gone.
