Create backups using the version chain scheme with Acronis True Image (Cyber ​​Protect Home Office)

7. Create a new differential backup and clean up old backups

As explained before, with the "Version Chain Model" backup model, old backups can be deleted automatically only if they are older than 6 months and the other prerequisites are met.
As you can see, in our case, we have 10 backups (3 full backups and 7 differential backups).

To demonstrate this, we changed the date on our computer to a date that was more than 6 months in the past.
Then, we reopened Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) and clicked the "Backup" button.

As you can see, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) starts by analyzing your backups.

On your external hard drive, a new ".tibx" file will be created.

As expected, this is a new differential backup.

Once the differential backup (dating from today "06/03/25") is created, you will notice that the first old "-000X.tibx" files have been deleted (except the 1st ".tibx" file, which size is still exactly the same).
Indeed, old backups can only be deleted automatically after at least 6 months and the 1st full backup will never be deleted by Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image) with this backup model "Version chain scheme".

In Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (True Image), you can see that the backup is complete.

In the "Activity" tab, you will see this time that several gigabytes (GB) have been freed.
